Working Brief on a Single Question

A two-week assignment for leaders with one specific question that is not large enough for a full engagement, but consequential enough to deserve outside thinking. We agree the question in writing, gather what is needed, and return a brief of approximately fifteen pages.

Questions we are often asked

How is Mentari Consulting different from a larger strategy firm?

Larger firms often assign teams of varying seniority to an engagement. At Mentari, the work is conducted by the consultant you initially meet. We do not serve dozens of clients simultaneously; our engagements are intentionally limited in number so that each one receives adequate time. The scope of our services is also deliberately constrained — we do not offer implementation, outsourced management, or ongoing retainers by default.

Are your services suitable for companies that are not in financial difficulty?

Yes — and in fact most of our clients are in reasonably sound condition. The questions we engage with most often are about the next chapter: who will lead, what direction to take, whether a particular decision is sound. These are questions that arise precisely when things are working and leadership has time to think carefully rather than react.

How long does an initial conversation take, and what does it cover?

We typically meet for between forty-five minutes and an hour. We listen to what the leader is dealing with, ask a few clarifying questions, and share our view of whether and how we might be useful. There is no sales presentation; we find that straightforward conversation is the most efficient way to establish whether there is a fit.

What happens to the information shared during an engagement?

Information shared with us remains confidential. We do not reference client matters in marketing materials, in discussions with other clients, or in any public forum. We are willing to formalise this through a non-disclosure agreement before any substantive conversation begins, if the client prefers.

Can the Working Brief be delivered remotely, or must we meet in person?

The Working Brief can be scoped and delivered remotely, though we prefer an initial in-person meeting to agree the question precisely. The Family Business Continuity Review includes two on-site visits by necessity, and the Strategy Conversation Series can be conducted at our offices on Jalan Tun Razak or at the client's premises.

Do you work with companies outside Kuala Lumpur?

We work with clients across Peninsular Malaysia. Travel time is factored into the scoping of on-site visits. For clients in East Malaysia, we discuss the practicalities during the initial conversation and propose an arrangement that makes sense for both parties.
